The purpose of the Christian Church, (Ecclesia
"meaning called out ones" - church consists of believers, not buildings in which
they meet, is the following:
a. To build a believer's personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ through
corporate praise and worship
b. building our personal relationship with Jesus through the anointed teaching and
preaching of God's Word
c. through the fellowship of the saints, Jesus Blood is continually cleansing us from all
sin - 1 John 1:7
Some things that the true church is not:
1. a social club
2. a "House of God" that burdens Christians with service and rituals that are
interfering with the believer's relationship with Jesus
3. entertainment designed to make us "feel holy"
Also, many Christians expect to receive from their Church things that only can be provided
to them by Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Spiritual abuse is increasing in many churches. The ways of recognizing it and how to deal with it: CBN's articles on Spiritual Abuse
The Prophet Jeremiah was called by God to speak dire warnings to his people that were not
heeded. As a result, many of his contemporaries hated Jeremiah even while they watched his
prophetic warnings come true before their eyes. In spite of this Jeremiah was able to say
to Almighty God: "As for me, I have not hastened from being a pastor to follow
thee: neither have I desired the woeful day; Thou knowest: that which came out of my lips
was right before Thee."Jer 17:16
The faithful Pastor will be a minister and servant of God's Word, not a critic of the Word
of God. For this reason the apostles requested that the first deacons be selected in order
to handle temporal needs in the local church body in order that the apostles might not
lose focus of their principal calling.
Acts 6:3-4 "Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report,
full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will
give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word."
To the pastors who read this,
take courage for the Lord has promised His faithful pastors a crown:
"The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness
of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed
the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but
willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God's
heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye
shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. Likewise, ye younger,
submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be
clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble
yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due
time..." 1 Peter 5:1-6
These scriptures are preceding the great chapter on Christian love (Greek: agapao) in 1
Corinthians 13. From these scriptures it is clear that each member of the local Body of
Christ has a role to play in the church. When one member fails to perform his/her service
to the Lord in the Church, others, usually the pastor, become overly burdened. Sadly this
is the case in most of our evangelical churches today where 20% of the members perform 80%
of the labor. I warn each believer (including myself) to avoid being spectators in the
local church and begin to function in your gift and calling. We will all account for our
use of these gifts before our Lord Jesus Christ at the Bema someday. I beseech you to be
faithful in your church service and not to be found wanting at the Judgment Seat of Christ
where the works of each believer (not their salvation) will be tested.
This failure in the Body of Christ has caused some pastors and active church members to
become "burned out", broken and disillusioned through overwork and unnecessary
burdens placed upon them, on their personal relationships with Jesus and with their
families.
I also strongly encourage each believer to determine his/her gift and calling. Through a
prayer of faith, God is pleased to reveal His wisdom in this matter to us (James 1:5).
Since the Holy Spirit has given each of us a gift and calling, it is His perfect will for
us to know what they are and to use them under His guidance for the edification of the
Body of Christ. I also strongly urge each believer to avoid church work that is outside of
his/her calling simply because it "needs to be done". There are a great many
well-intentioned activities in the evangelical churches that are unnecessary wastes of
time and human energy. Such activities do not glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, do not assist
the poor, do not reach out to the lost and do not edify other church members. Abstain from
these superfluous activities or functions to which you have not been called.
DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SAY NO WHEN ASKED
TO PERFORM A CHURCH SERVICE OUTSIDE OF YOUR CALLING. YOU ARE NOT IN THE BODY OF CHRIST TO
WIN ANYONE'S APPROVAL EXCEPT THE APPROVAL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.
